“Our libraries are not only a repository of books, but a repository of knowledge,” said CP Alonzo Luis Alvarado, Deputy Director of The Yucatan Cultural Institute yesterday, during the “First Meeting of Child Readers”. The children gathered in the Central Library “Manuel Cepeda Peraza”, and were reminded that today’s world is theirs, and also for tomorrow they must be constantly prepared to face challenges and emerge triumphant.
He reminded them that the more they read, the more productive and capable they become. He invited the children to take advantage of the forum that started Thursday, with the participation of young readers in Merida, Caucel, Kanasín, Izamal, Valladolid and Ticopó, and Acanceh and will conclude on Saturday April 9th.
The teacher Jorge Cortes Ancona, General Director of Literature at the ICY, explained that the Institute of Culture of Yucatan, opens this space precisely in the month when the child is celebrated in Yucatan, in order that children can express their concerns about reading.
Cortes Ancona, recalled that the National Reading Rooms CONACULTA have been implemented in Yucatan since 2003. As we know, this program is made possible with support from the Institute of Culture and the voluntary participation of civil society with organized reading rooms in different areas of the body. He stressed that to date there are 161 reading rooms that cater to all sectors of the population of Yucatan.
The Children’s First Reading Meeting, brings together more than sixty children of different reading rooms operating in the State with the intent to exchange experiences and new readers, plus there will be workshops and games related to promoting the reading habit.
Activities will take place on Friday, April 8 at 4:00 pm in the Parque de Santa Lucia, the children will hold a Reading Rally on the Pirates in Yucatan, a subject taken from a book by Dr. Jorge Victoria Ojeda. Also on Friday evening activities will be from 16:00 to 19:00, in the Biblioteca Manuel Cepeda Peraza.
On Saturday, April 9th, activities will continue from 9:00 am and at 2:30 pm will be held the closing of this event. The entrance to children, parents and society in general is free.
